Talk to the waiter

When you go out to eat at a restaurant, sometimes you feel overwhelmed by the choices their menu offer. Some menus can have long lists of items on them. So if you do feel a little confused, ask your waiter for more details. Most restaurants have trained staff to lecture you about what’s on the menu. If you’re visiting a restaurant for the first time, ask the waiter what the most popular dish is.

Eat what you like

Don’t be forced into eating the ‘special dish’ of the day at a restaurant or feel pressured to eat in a certain order. You should just eat depending on your mood. Normally the starters are more interesting than the main course at some restaurants, and I usually have one or two starters before the main course. If you’re still hungry you can always share a dessert.

Divide and share

If you’re with a group of people, sharing a plate or a few different starters works best. When you got few different starter dishes, you are bound to have chicken, fish, lamb and beef options on the menu. Make sure you ask how many portions come in each starter. I’ve been caught a few times thinking that the starter is enough to share with another and only to find out it hardly is enough for one bite.

Be upfront

When at a restaurant, you are paying money to have delicious food, so you should not settle for sloppy food and let the waiter know of any concerns you may have. Always let the waiter know if you’re dieting, have an allergy or are vegetarian. You should be able to adjust what you order.

A wine for all seasons

You don’t have to choose a different wine for each course. I prefer to stick to white wine, but if someone orders red wine, well just enjoy it! Try to choose a wine that goes with all the food you’ll be eating. If you’re in a group everyone will be ordering different things so it’s important to select a variety that will work with everything.
